Herman Brown’s life has been shaped by compassion, fearlessness, and a deep commitment to serving others. From an early age, he understood how precious life is, which fueled a lifelong desire to uplift people wherever he went. While working in New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Herman built a successful career in advertising on Madison Avenue. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he was selected to lead a national IBM diversity and awareness training program, traveling across the country to foster dialogue rooted in respect, dignity, and human connection. Herman was involved with the National Alliance of Businessmen (NAB), a government-funded program that partnered with returning Vietnam veterans. During his time as a loan executive to the NAB, he met with CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, including Henry Ford II, to encourage greater corporate support. He worked with the organization for about a year and a half in 1969, describing the experience as “a great time and amazing experience.”
In 1978, he moved to Los Angeles, where life’s experiences deepened his faith and clarified his purpose. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, helping others became his true calling.
Rainbow® Sandals founder, Jay “Sparky” Longley, first crossed paths with Herman in 2009 at a Marine Christmas Party, where they quickly discovered a shared, unwavering commitment to helping those in need. Their mutual passion for service led to meaningful collaborations on impactful projects, including Showers of Blessings, providing weekly showers to the unhoused in Santa Ana, CA. Recognizing Herman’s dedication and heart for giving back, Sparky invited him to become an Ambassador for the Rainbow Sandals Foundation. Together, they have supported hundreds of nonprofit organizations and helped thousands of individuals by providing essential resources such as food, clothing, shelter and building safe houses.
Today, Herman dedicates his life to serving the most vulnerable, particularly women and children affected by domestic violence, both locally and internationally, working closely with local Sheriff’s Departments to ensure survivors receive the care, shelter, and protection they need. Through his relentless efforts, women and children have found refuge, safety, and hope for a new beginning.
Each day, Herman can be found gathering and delivering essential items to local organizations. For him, every meal delivered, every safe house built, and every life touched is a miracle, evidence of God’s hand at work.
Herman never meets a stranger. His love for people drives him to share the belief that there is always a better way forward. Though he has known both abundance and loss, he has chosen to dedicate his life to those who have little, finding his greatest joy not in recognition, but in service. In every act, large or small. Herman points all credit to God, believing he is simply a vessel, faithfully serving wherever he is called.
